Even in times of uncertainty, be unafraid

The Bible mentions two specific types of fear. One is the type of fear, for example, that children have of their parents. It's a fear that breeds respect. Also known as "the fear of the Lord." I grew up in a Christian household and went to a Baptist school for many years, so I'm very familiar with that type of fear. Some of you know exactly what I'm talking about!

Another type of fear is really a detriment to us and and is to be overcome. This is known as the "Sprit of fear" which is mentioned in 2 Timothy 1:7.

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind” (NKJV).

A spirit of fearfulness does not come from God. It is easy to get stressed out and afraid during times of uncertainty. It's easy to be afraid of what the future might bring. I am definitely guilty of freaking out when things start to get tense, especially when it comes to politics. But who can blame me? The world has become increasingly dangerous and new threats seem to emerge all the time.

I have to remind myself that although there are so many things in life we cannot control, I need to find my comfort in knowing that through Jesus and the Bible, God has revealed himself and He is in control.

Below are some verses that I think are really great reminders to not be afraid.

…let all who take refuge in you be glad; let them ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may rejoice in you.  Psalm 5:11

And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.  Matthew 10:28-31

And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.  Luke 2:9-11

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Joshua 1:9

For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.  Romans 8:38-39
